The Inverse Moon Landing

The moon landings attracted worldwide attention. But an equally daring adventure took place underwater in 1978 when the North Sea divers entered the record books with a 320 meter deep dive in the icy waters of the Skånevik Fjord off the Norwegian coast.

The accomplishment was nicknamed "The Inverse Moon Landing" and was the deepest dive ever performed in the North Sea. These brave pioneers in scuba diving contributed to the discovery of huge oil riches beneath the sea surface, which in turn paved the way for Norway to invest in social and environmentally friendly projects worldwide – to the benefit of Norwegians for generations to come.

The North Sea 1978 Special Edition, produced by Swiss watchmaker Edox, marks this exceptional event with a brand new and exclusive watch.

Edox is proud to be the official manufacturer of the North Sea 1978 Special Edition.

About the watch

These watches are made in memory of these historical events, and what the pioneer divers in the North Sea accomplished. Naturally, this robust and sporty watch is water-resistant down to 320m, matching that epic 1978 dive to the metre. It can handle a rough day-to-day use and an active lifestyle, but it’s important to note this:

Even though you can dive with the watch, it’s not designed as an optimal diving watch with Super‑LumiNova® luminescent coating. On this model we have chosen more subtle colors on the hands and indices.

The North Sea 1978 is a versatile watch that fits the daily life in every way; be it diving, hunting, skiing, boating and other outdoor activities – as well as the perfect fit to your suit.

(For the optimal diving watch, check out North Sea Deep Arctic & Deep Explorer.)

A stainless-steel case, coated in black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) for extra toughness, houses the Calibre 80 automatic movement.

The case back features the North Sea Divers’ official logo – a stylised dive helmet – and the words ‘The Inverse Moon Landing’.

North Sea Divers – heroes of the deep.

The watch comes in a waterproof Kevlar suitcase and comes with two straps – one exclusive dark brown leather strap and one black custom made nylon strap that you can use in water.

Custom straps

In the same way you choose tires and rims for your new car, you can choose different straps for your new watch.

For the exclusive version, you can pick the high-quality straps that are hand-sewn in Basel, Switzerland by Atelier Petrov. Straps of Cordovan, Buffalo or Crocodile leather.

You can also choose the more sporty rubber straps / nato straps from Rubber B.

All custom straps are equipped with a quick-shift function.

This series of 70 pieces is sold exclusively here at swisstime.no – this unique watch is not sold anywhere else in the world.

North Sea

The brand "North Sea" is owned by Swiss Time AS in all EU countries, Norway and Switzerland for the past 13 years. We have been informed that Bremont and Steinhart have produced watch models called "North Sea", which they do not have permission to. This is considered illegal and may result in liability. The first thing to do when creating a new watch brand is to check item class 14 in the country where you want to produce the watches, which obviously these suppliers have not done. Only Swiss Time AS is entitled to the brand "North Sea", and Edox is licensed to produce "Edox North Sea Collection". Legal action is being taken by Swiss Time AS and Edox to stop the above models.
